David Spade tells us the rules for playing the celebrity card, and what it means for Reese Witherspoon... who just tried it out while her husband was being arrested for DUI.
It's simple: If you have to ask if someone knows who you are, you're not that famous, according to David Spade.
On early Friday April 19, 2013, Witherspoon was arrested and charged with disorderly conduct after she disobeyed instructions from an Atlanta police officer to remain in the vehicle, while the police officer was working a traffic stop following observation of erratic driving by Witherspoon's husband, Jim Toth. Witherspoon argued with the police officer, saying that she did not believe he was a real police officer and asking if he knew who she was. Meanwhile husband/talent agent Jim Toth was arrested DUI with a blood alcohol of 0.139.
The couple was released on bond at 3:30 AM the same morning. Witherspoon was able to attend the New York premiere of her film Mud on April 21, 2013 and she issued an apology via her publicist later that night, stating that she had "clearly had one drink too many" and was "deeply embarrassed about the things I said ... I was disrespectful to the officer who was just doing his job. I have nothing but respect for the police and I’m very sorry for my behavior."
Court date was scheduled for April 22, 2013, but Witherspoon's lawyer appeared on her behalf and arranged for the hearing date to be rescheduled for May 22, 2013 due to Witherspoon's promotional obligations for the movie "Mud."
"Mud" is about a namesake fugitive (Matthew McConaughey) who becomes friends with Arkansas teenagers Ellis and Neckbone. The fugitive attempts to reunite with his love Juniper (Reese Witherspoon), and the teenagers help him evade the authorities.
