The Great Wall of China was panned and defended regarding whitewashing. The film, which was set in the Northern Song Dynasty of ancient China, sets white/male Matt Damon in the lead role of William Garin. Director Zhang Yimou defended the casting choice, stating that Damon is not playing a role that was originally conceived for a Chinese actor.
