Gravity Sets October Record in Box Office with $55.6 Million Debut

Gravity debuted with a record-breaking $55.6 million in North America, the top October debut statistic of all time. The three-day showing for stars Sandra Bullock and George Clooney is the bester ever start for both stars.
Eighty percent of Gravity's opening-weekend revenue came from 3D screens. Good news, considering the dramatic decline in 3D attendance. It's one of the highest 3D percentages of all time with other leaders being Avatar's 3D share on opening weekend of 72 percent, and Life of Pi's of 68 percent. Internationally, the 3D share was 70 percent this past weekend.
Adults over the age of 25 made up more than 82 percent of the audience, while nearly 60 percent of the audience was over the age of 35.
Dr. Ryan Stone, played by Sandra Bullock, is a medical engineer on her first Space Shuttle mission and is accompanied by veteran astronaut Matt Kowalsky, played by George Clooney. Kowalsky is in command of the shuttle flight, which is scheduled to be his last. During a spacewalk, the space shuttle is destroyed when it seems like it is hit by something -- maybe space junk. Stone and Kowalsky are stranded in space with no communications with Earth.
